UK-UAE Collaboration in Energy Transition

In June 2022, the UAE-UK Business Council launched its work on energy transition at the UAE-UK Energy Summit in Aberdeen during the Energy Exports Conference. The aim of the summit was to identify the barriers to bilateral collaboration, and explore emerging opportunities for collaboration in the following three areas:

  • What needs to be achieved by the energy industry in the short term (i.e., before 2030) in order to sustain the trajectory to Net Zero by 2050?

  • How do we reskill the workforce for the post-carbon energy sector of the future?

  • How can we finance the energy transition?

The campaign has been led on the UK side by Stuart Broadley, CEO, the Energy Industries Council and on the UAE side by Khaleefa Al Mheiri, former Acting CEO, Ta’ziz. Mashal Al Kindi, Acting CEO, Ta’ziz has now replaced Khaleefa Al Mheiri as the UAE lead. The campaign group consists of business leaders and industry experts from companies such as Shell, Masdar, BP, Petrofac and ADNOC.

CoP26 highlighted the importance of energy companies collaborating with their partners in technology, academia, finance and government to build momentum in the transition to clean energy This will continue to be a prominent theme of CoP28, being held in Dubai from November 30th to December 12th 2023.

In January 2023, the UAE-UK Business Council published its first policy paper on Energy Transition during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, whilst hosting a summit on Sustainability with participants such as Rolls-Royce, Etihad and FAB Bank. This policy paper set out proposals for closer UK-UAE collaboration on energy transition.

The UAE-UK Business Council is continuing its work on this topic by hosting a session at the Energy Exports Conference again in June 2023, with a panel discussion on ‘Reskilling Workers for The Energy Sector of the Future’ with panellists from Petrofac, X-Academy, ADNOC and The Energy Institute. We are also working through the recommendations set out in the Policy Paper to prioritise our programme of bilateral activity on energy transition once CoP28 has concluded.
